Bridal Show Success - Part I

One of the best ways to increase your wedding DJ business is by participating in Bridal Shows. Bridal shows offer great exposure and an opportunity to sell your services directly to hundreds of brides who are looking for a wedding DJ. It also provides an opportunity to network with other wedding professionals who might be willing to send business your way. Many shows even provide a list of names, phone numbers and addresses of all the attendees that can later be used to follow up after the show.

Here are our tips to ensure a successful bridal show.

    1. Select the right show. Bridal shows vary so you’ll want to check out several in your area before deciding which one(s) to participate in. If you’re unaware of any in your area, check with your local bridal and tux shops. You should also be aware that some shows may require that you join their bridal association in order to participate.

    2. Offer to DJ the fashion show. This will enable brides to see you in action and you might even get a discount on your booth or free mentions throughout the show!

    3. Network with other wedding professionals. Developing relationships with the other professionals can lead to mutual referrals. The best time to talk with vendors is before the show (after they’ve set up their booth) and during the fashion show when things slow down.

    4. Arrive early and allow plenty of time to set up. You don’t want to be racing around at the last minute (or worse, after the show has already started) trying to get everything in place.

    5. Don’t sit in your booth. This gives the impression that you really aren't interested in those visiting your booth.

    6. Wear a tuxedo. Even if you don't wear a tux to the gig, rent one for the show. You'll look more professional than if you simply wear a suit and tie. You may even be able to rent at a discount from a participating Tux shop.

    7. Have knowledgeable staff available at all times (even during breaks). Your booth should never be empty.

    8. Don’t eat or chew gum in your booth. There's nothing worse than trying to talk to someone when they're mouth is full. For lunch, stay away from onions, garlic or greasy finger foods (chicken, pizza, etc...).

    9. Make personal contact. Simply handing out your printed materials is not enough. You’ll need to personally speak with each bride. In many cases, you’ll only have 30 seconds to make an impression, so make the best of it.

    10. Qualify attendees. Ask questions such as “Do you have a DJ for your wedding reception?” and “When is the big day?”. This will allow you to quickly identify those brides who are in need of a DJ on dates that you have available. You don't want to lose valuable time talking with someone only to find out that you're already booked.

    11. Make appointments. Don’t focus on booking gigs during the show. Explain that this isn't the type of environment in which you typically like to conduct business and invite them to make an appointment for a free consultation. This way you can give the bride the personalized attention that the she deserves and you can better sell yourself in a relaxed atmosphere.

    12. Offer a promotion, discount or added benefit if they book their event within a specified amount of time (during the show, within two weeks, two months, etc…).

    13. Have a drawing for a prize giveaway in your booth. Make sure attendees include their address and phone number (in case they are not present to win.) Most lead lists take a couple weeks to prepare and this will give you a jump on the competition.

    14. Follow up after the show. Many vendors do not follow up once the show is over, so take advantage of this by calling or mailing brochures or discount coupons.
